Being taught to read at all is borderline unnecessary but reading those recipes is useful, as is anybody leaving you written instructions on how to serve them better. You could be a absolute genius, far smarter than everybody you've served combined, but it just doesn't matter. The best you can hope for is using your brains to think about how to serve better, with Master's approval and permission every step of the way of course. Just because you think you're smart doesn't mean you suddenly get to decide anything.

Plus all a slave really needs to do is act cute and enticing so that people may enjoy her and want to use her more. Any bimbo can figure that out. Even if she's 1% of your brainpower a fellow slave is probably exactly as good at her work as you.
