What you SHOULD be asking is "Why is it in English?"
If there was an alien species and it just observed humanity, you would assume another language would be used based on the global prevalence of that language. That's IF the aliens had any concept of language on this planet.
It would be much easier to display pictographic concepts using simple sigil illustrations. Sort of similar to the gold plates put on that satellite.
We cannot anticipate an alien species to "know" anything human, but math is fairly constant. Theoretically, initial contact may be more numerical and mathematic than linguistic. There is also a possibility of chemistry and physics as you could draw a carbon atom (4 protons, 4 neutrons, 4 electrons) and a technologically fluent alien species would recognize it as a carbon atom.
THEN we can start exchanging bits and pieces of our language and attempt to co-decipher.
