Outside of America (or for existing American homes that don't have a furnace system), there are Box Air Conditioners. A window is removed, or a hole is cut in a wall, and an entire air conditioning system, complete with evaporator, condenser, compressor, blower fan, etc.. is install as a single unit.
There are also Split-System Air Conditioners, which are functionally the same thing, except the evaporator and condenser/compressor are two separate units, and only a small hole needs to be made to run the refrigerant lines through. Not too dissimilar to how furnace-integrated air conditioners are installed, but instead of the evaporator being attached to the duct system, it's just a simple standalone indoor unit.

Retrofitting these units to existing buildings can be difficult, especially with the high power requirements. Many older buildings simply do not have good-enough electrical wiring to handle an air conditioner.
