Of course if you get a recreation out of Italy they'll try to make him look swarthoid. They'll select the darkest "pigment" so they don't have to accept the fact that they're mutts.
But if it weren't true, why do Italians, much like Greeks similarly seethe over it? They should be able to brush it off.
