Okay, then just so we don't talk past each other, let me ask you this: if someone identifies as a huge Star Wars fan and has read every book, played and collected most of the narrative games, collects a lot of the toys, really enjoys many of the cartoons, maybe even cosplays as some character and by doing that has made friends in the community and a portion of his social life revolves around the fandom, but has never watched the movies, would you say he's not a Star Wars fan?

Maybe you would, and if you do that's fine. Maybe someone will say you're a gatekeeper, but even if you are, maybe being a gatekeeper is not a bad thing.
