>Robert Nixon, "the Brick Moron", was an African-American youth who murdered five persons in California and Ilinois in 1937. Finally convicted of the murder of 24 year old Florence Castle, he was executed in Illinois's electric chair June 16, 1939. The newspaper coverage of his crimes was sensational and marred by racial slurs and epitaphs that would not be used in any kind of 21st century news coverage. The June 5, 1938 Chicago Tribune ran a story that went "Brick Slayer is Likened To Jungle Beast" and called him "...the missing link in evolution. Civilization has left Nixon practically untouched. His hunched shoulders and long, sinewy arms that dangle almost to his knees; his out-thrust head and cat-like tread all suggest the animal. He is very black-- almost pure Negro. His physical characteristics suggest an earlier link in the species."
