Teng here, thanks to whoever post the Howlers story, that's incredibly good stuff, first thing in a while I couldn't put down and legitimately ruined my sleep schedule for work over to catch up to where it is! If the author lurks here PLEASE KEEP GOING. The premise of first contact, but one party has lost their mind is a great premise. Made some real quick Fyrix fanart this morning, still not really sure how to do the thorasic flanges
Here's my thoughts:
the framing device at the start is really good, its fun reading waiting for those logs to get transmitted, and the little name details in the command lines is a fun foreshadowing of the alien scientist character.
Love how well the aliens are written as being alien, incorporating the communication in non verbal ways, the different ways their cultural norms affect how they act. Having the ayy scientist be a (near) analog of a human with autism is a good angle to help explore that without it coming across as awkwardly exposition dumping (In general GREAT show don't telling with all the alien biology and culture)
>" It seemed to be one of those lamentable languages that overloaded one word to be able to mean wildly different thing"
lmao, this was a good bit
The stuff happening in chapter 17 to Nestiri reminds me a lot of the trial of Thel 'Vadam at the start of Halo 2, was that an actual inspiration for it or just me making that connection?
>Nithry, claimed by his own delusions of grandeur
Shaka, when the walls fell
A lot of great details on the deciphering the language bits with Zyrrs and her roommate, all the barriers like "how do you ever parse an unknown data format" is great. The numbers mentioned lining up with ASCII codes was also a fantastic bit.
