Because North America suffered more than us with the destruction of old urban landscapes for car infrastructure. It also happened in Brazil but in smaller scale.

This is how everywhere on earth looked like before the car. Also the "new world" isn't as new as Europeans seem to think. You have to remember that our societies started in the 1500s, North American societies in the 1600s, this was a long time ago.
