It's just nature. Cuteness is a legitimate survival strategy in a world dominated by humans. Don't get so overworked about a bunch of dead peasants.
I do support removing invasive species, but not by killing them. That's just tragedy caused by laziness. Catch and castrate. Heavily, heavily fine people who don't castrate their cats or abandon them on the street too.

When thinking about animal walfare you've gotta realize that NPCs do not matter. Statistics like the one you quoted only serve as means to push for implementation of laws to reduce animal suffering.
