You kinda missed the point of the story, his family does care about him, but Copen just can't accept himself which is why he runs away.

The fucked up part is that there is no closure on his story at all, he fucks off and probably dies off screen. Usually this kind of character eventually gets his redemption but 3 just fucking pretends he never even existed.
