I can only really talk on Clannad and AIR, but it's not just lyrics. As AIR progresses the music itself becomes weaker along side Misuzu. At the start of the game you have a loud piano and strings with all these synths. And by the end the music is nothing more than silent electronic whispers and spaced out piano notes. It's way more powerful than people notice.
