I'm from a well educated and reasonably well off family that did well through hard work and education (courtesy communism) about 70 years ago so other than some idiotic uncomfortable questions and comments by ignorant Northies (we had a Khatri neighbour), materially not much. But caste discrimination can and does kill, even to this day, particularly in the backward Northern plains. I'm what's technically known as the "creamy layer" in Indian political discourse.
class trumps caste any day just like it trumps race and sex / gender.

Kinda, depends on what you mean by work. Trade unions are militant. This means that we have top class healthcare and education but many qualified people like me live outside Kerala. But yeah for average people, the basics are well taken care of. Alcoholism and suicides are high. Kerala spends more on booze per capita than the per capita income of Uttar Pradesh. But I'm glad I'm from Kerala and not UP.
