All of the characters in BG1 and BG2 are appropriately tailored for the setting and the plot at the time they are introduced. They all have a reasonable and setting-appropriate backstory and a plausible reason for the character to encounter them and develop a relationship. Most of the backstories are interesting although some are generic (Imoen, for example, was added late). BG2 chars more extraordinary and have more impressive backstories, but that is appropriate given that BG2 begins at a higher level at a point when the main character is already famous enough to be targeted for kidnapping by a powerful wizard.

The only origin companion in BG3 with a reasonably humble and not completely off-the-wall bonkers backstory is the Githyanki, who is a fucking extra-planar being.
