>A fascist’s commitment to the cause only goes so far as his own perceived benefit from the order created by that brutal hierarchy
This is so stunningly ignorant that not even sure where to begin. This entire post, but this line in particular ignores all those who absolutely fought to the bitter end. Even many of the survivors only fled when all pretense of a chain of command collapsed and there are those who still stuck on to the ideology through thick and thin.
Fascism is just Roman dictatorship or principate with post industrialism taken into account. Once you realize this it ceases to become some boogeyman and you can actually analyze it for what it is. The cult of personality, Fuhrerprinzip, the desire of aestheticism, nationalism, masculinity, hierarchy, etc.
If your definition of Fascism stops at "government overreach" then you will never understand the ideology. Both Marxists and Capitalists fall into this trap which is why Marxists say it is Capitalist for allowing degrees of free enterprise and Capitalists say it is Marxist for having degrees of collectivism. It doesn't dawn on either side that it is neither.
