apparently there was indeed criticism about why the Trade Federation droids were humanoid robots piloting tanks and using guns instead of simply using robot tanks and having built-in weaponry, so the next movie featured robot tanks and wrist blasters and they inserted a bit of lore about how the Trade Federation's army in the first movie was a secret army so it made use of tanks designed for living crew
