The main catalyst that made Japan surrender was the Soviets pushing them out of Manchuria. They knew the next thing that would happen is Russia would come in from the north and work their way down. Russia pushed Japan out in a matter of weeks and at the time they were the largest and most heavily equipped army on earth.
