Actually incorrect, if it's as bad as you claim then the bar is low and you're already making a terrible impression by hiding away from them. This is the easiest time to really make a good impression by defying the low expectations and it making a larger impact.
Carry in mind it's a lot easier to make giant strides when you're starting out, doing these things won't carry the same punch in 5 years when you do it effortlessly, but you'll smile at being able to do it at all.
