It's probably similar to how Roland coped about things with his "That's that, and this is this", cause Vergilius similarly disliked the state of things, but he found a way to feel a sense of belonging and purpose through the orphanage, with that one gone, he didn't even enjoy thinking about it unless it was to use mang to power his attacks.
Him going against the flow in canto 6 also is him kinda breaking away from this too, since the situation mirrored his biggest failure yet, by dragging Garnet into the mess and failing everyone form the orphanage, so instead of just going along with things, he went against what was expected of him.
