Ásatrú is a non-dogmatic, experience-based religion. This means that there are no dogmas about what is right or wrong, and that it is largely up to the individual believer or group to define their own religious beliefs. Nevertheless, they are united by a common set of concepts and rituals.
In Ásatrú, how one behaves is far more important than what one believes. Concepts such as honor, courtesy, and hospitality are often emphasized as important for Ásatrú believers.
Earthly life is considered more important than what happens after death.
The belief system can be described as polytheistic or animistic. The basis for the religious content, or belief if you will, is a modern interpretation of the myths and worldview handed down in the form of Norse mythology. We do not have complete knowledge of how religion was practiced in the Nordic countries in the period before the introduction of Christianity. One of the dividing lines between different groups in the Ásatrú community has been whether to seek to recreate the religious practices of the Norse era as closely as possible, or to allow modern reinterpretations.
