That's not right. There might be variations and twists on the concept but Akira and Amon definitely fuse. Anyway, yugioh is so tied to the weekly shonen jump and toy commercial meta, that it just dances around romance despite it being necessary for storylines. Most manga with the hero fusing with demons directly tackle the concept.
