Yea. They were totally just afraid of the thing that wasn't going to happen to them but it actually did happen to them. The other thing is information travels by word of mouth extremely fast. They knew full well what was coming to them and that article downplays their rational fear of being mercilessly pillaged and raped. Unbelievable.
