The US won't balkanize because:

a) political divisions are urban-rural, not on the state level, with a few exceptions

b) there are enormous social and economic incentives for maintaining a unified American state, including the fact that most American extended families are spread across the country for economic reasons

c) there aren't regional identities anymore, people identify based on race and political tribe rather than location

d) any breakaway state would immediately become a target for foreign subversion, because America's superpower status is dependent on it being a unified state bordering 2 oceans and thus is able to project power across the world without worrying about its own backyard

It's all or nothing, either you capture the throne and unify the empire or someone else does
