Am I doing something wrong?

I feed my chocobo and it only gets 10k experience. Doing the math, I'd have to feed it 145 times JUST to get it to level 11. And you can only feed it once per hour. And I'd still have 9 more levels to go.

I took my chocobo on like 50 hunt trains and the exp you see in pic related is all he picked up. He got basically nothing.

Is there something I'm missing? Am I doing content too high level for him?
