If you can afford to take the time off, do it.
However, I'd estimate you'd need about 3 years of work on average before you can get comfy, with an obvious risk that you might not make it at all. Some get success faster, some get it slower.
Going into making h-games is perhaps the best decision of my life, including all the learning opportunity for creative skills. However, that requires the same dedication a 9-5 job (maybe more) does along with being able to self-motivate. I would also recommend that if you can't work on adult stuff without having that "crash out" that I think some people do where they go from horny to "what the fuck am I doing with my life" then you don't even bother.

There are many people who start it out while still doing normal full time work and they still manage to get success but in that case you either need to be really good at what you do, or you'll be using RPGmaker and other shortcuts so you can make it with what little energy you hvae on the weekends and evenings.

all right, now get to work
note that adding too many meters can make things confusing. You have to tutorialize every meter for the players and any meter that does not actively add to gameplay should be scrapped.
