Q: I really enjoy the side quests in Final Fantasy XIV and the yellow quests in the maps in later versions. They feel like they complement the world and story perfectly. It feels like I'm truly living in Eorzea. When writing side quests, do you just think, "This idea would be great in this context!" (after completing the map and the main story), or are some side quests developed alongside the main story and maps?
Takayanagi: Thank you so much for your enthusiasm in exploring Eorzea!
As this friend mentioned, many of Eorzea's side quests depict the daily lives of its inhabitants. Your description of "the feeling of truly living in Eorzea" is truly the best compliment we can give!
In patches 5.0 and 6.0, I conceived some standalone quests without cutscenes. I consulted with Ms. Ishikawa, who is in charge of the main story, and crafted them from the perspective of "someone living this kind of life" and "someone thinking about these things." I gave a more detailed introduction at last year's Fan Festival in China; be sure to check it out! However, those unexpected quests were mostly created by Mr. Oda from the world design team! Things like the Giant Beaver quest in 5.0, the Fairy quest in 6.0, and even the Cornservant quest were all created by Mr. Oda himself.
