When you consider that ancient Greece (specifically Minoan Greece) was the first European civilisation and went on to influence the entire Western world to some degree, including the popular understanding of the word "god", it's reasonable to take "Western" to mean "Greek" without any other qualifier like "Nordic" or "Celtic". Our knowledge of gods from other parts of Europe that didn't develop their own writing system comes largely from early Christian missionaries, too, and they would usually have been more familiar with Greek/Roman polytheism than any other kind.
