ITT: Live service trojan horses

Games where you think you're just getting into a multiplayer game, and then once you're balls deep realize it's just a live service game in a different coat of paint.

Changing the core mechanics of an already established game just to pander to non-Europeans?
Did we really need to fish gold? did we really need 10000000 different flavors of knights? did we really need regenerating shields and ultimate attacks?

are the campaigns in AoE2DE as good as those in AoM, WC3, and SC/SC2?
