I usually play the first route with the Male character, but I don't really like Cross's design either.
I know it's banal, but I really would have preferred something more '90s, a protagonist like Jou from Tobikage, or something more traditional.

These two from Y are overdesigned and seem to force "cool" without substance. Forte at least has some nice expressions, but Cross doesn't do anything for me.
