The early Church teaching is that those people who cannot control their sexual urges (most people) should enter married life as soon as possible so that the urge is aimed towards virtuous goals in family life.
Monasticism is meant for people of unmatched virtue and chastity, not that everyone that enters is successful in that. However, within monasticism they can learn both worldly things (origin of universities) while also growing spiritually and gain spiritual discernment. Think of it like raising up philosophers, some of which go on to be philosopher kings, since bishops are chosen from the midst of monks.
