SO MUCH this. I recently had a conversation with some old librarian lady where she expressed the same thought. She told me how she suspected both of her daughters to be on the spectrum, as she was, but thought an actual diagnosis to be nearly impossible due to both daughter's ages. They were in their 20s, and by that point, she said, socially-incorporated women (99% of women, at least to my perception) have masked their personality so flawlessly that any irregular trait gets flattened out. She likened this case to her own experience since she came into contact with her autism at an old age, which I suppose was some sort of revelation.
In short, women are BIOLOGICALLY wired to be ordinary, standard, herd-creatures. It makes one reflect on how socially intelligent women are, if you're being charitable.
