At that time, the Bhagavan again addressed Prince Manjusri, saying:
Manjusri, there are many beings non-discerning of right from wrong, understanding only of greed and avarice, unfamiliar with charity, or the rewards of charity, dim-witted and without wisdom, lacking in faithful faculties.
They hoard treasure and wealth in great amounts, and expend themselves in protecting it, experiencing no joy in the heart should they see a beggar approaching.
Should they be forced to perform charity, it is like cutting flesh from the body, causing them deep pain and loss.
There are also countless greedy beings who store up wealth and resources which for their own person serve no purpose, and yet all the more they are unable to give any of it to their own family, servants, or retainers, or to any who might come and beg.
These beings, when this life should end, will be reborn in the realm of hungry ghosts, or else in that of the crawling beasts,
But from their having once heard in passing, long ago in the world of men, the name of the Tathagata Bhaiṣajyaguru Vaiḍūryaprabha, living now in evil realms they will suddenly remember this Tathagata's name,
And in the space of one thought disappear from where they are, returning to be reborn amongst men, retaining their past memories, fearful of the suffering of rebirth, and take no more pleasure in worldly delights.
They will delight in practicing charity everywhere, praising also others who give, and feel no attachment to any belongings, gradually becoming able to give freely their own head, eyes, hands, feet, blood, and flesh to any who would ask for them, let alone other treasures.
