There's no weird reason. Sprite graphics scales horribly once you leave 800x600, that's why we dropped it and went with 3D back in the day.
Computing has gotten powerful enough that you can do the retarded jeet thing and make sprites for a 4k game... it just does the exact same thing that people in early 2000s saw and recognised as unworkable, that is bajillion gigs of RAM, VRAM and a super fast and large hard drive to push all that crap in and out to not spend a day stuck on the loading screen.

You just cannot bullshit this sort of thing. A retarded solution will forever remain a retarded solution, it just became plausible for the HW to bruteforce it.
