The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus recorded that during the Roman siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE, a Roman soldier, described as being "hurried on by a certain divine fury," acted on his own initiative and, climbing on another soldier's back, hurled a flaming brand through a window into the Temple. This impulsive act ignited the fire that destroyed the Temple, even though the Roman general Titus had reportedly intended to save the structure. The Temple Mount itself was a hill, and the ensuing chaos included the sounds of Roman legions sweeping forward, the rebels' cries, and the noise of the Temple, so that "the hill itself, on which the Temple stood, was seething hot, as full of fire on every part of it."
