We in America are operating under the triple melting pot theory; that is, after three generations one ceases to identify with their ancestral land and instead identifies with their religion.
Therefore, America is traditionally Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish.
Here's a mental exercise. What the hell do I have in common as an American Catholic (who is white) with a (white) English Protestant? What does a Scottish Protestant have in common with a French Catholic? They're white?
Culture is not derived from color of skin; that is an accident of commonality which serves the greater bond of unity which is "culture."
So, what is culture? Culture comes from the Latin cultus, meaning common religious devotion of a people. Religion binds a people together. Everything else is subordinate to the greater bond.
This does not mean, however, that varying racial groups will magically get along under the same religion.
Racial ethnicity is subordinate to the greater progenitor of ethnicity: culture.
