You're being a bit too precious and working around the line work. If you want to keep line work, better off working under it. The downside to having it be too thought out is that you avoid painting over it. You got the right idea with your separation of light and shadow. At this stage, you'll get more buck depicting the most obvious and strongest highlights you can see. After you have the main elements in place, it's much easier to refine.
