To be fair they were rare as fuck. Even within the industry where people traded arcade boards and components like pokemon cards, you never saw an ad for them in "play meter" magazine and other arcade classifieds. Dozens of ads selling used SF2 boards but no superguns to go with them.

Superguns were bigger in japan but mostly unheard of in the west through the 80s and into the early 90s. It was only in that brief time when sf2 ruled the world that people actually started looking into them, and even then it was the radio shack weirds who cobbled them together.

Artisinal hobby kits did circulate and we heard about them through usenet, but itnwas all so home brew it isnt worth mentioning.
