It comes with being a walking simulator company, and not a RPG. Two completely different mindsets. With a RPG you give players the choice and mechanics to create their own stories, and to play their own characters. You're happy when they do so. In a walking simulator, instead you embody a very present main character which talks about himself in a narrative that talks about himself with disembodied voices talking about himself in long walking sessions.
TCR were nominally forced to create a RPG but really didn't want to. They "fixed" this contradiction by having you spend 50% of your time in flashback playing as Fabien in the Fabien walking sim. They really didn't want you to play a RPG.
