Yeah, that's one thing that definitely dates it. Obscure secrets with obtuse prerequisites sure aren't common any more, with everyone looking for a more organic/in-game way to hint at other paths. While it's technically possible to do that in Cave Story, it's realistically only learned on a second playthrough or some forum online.
