I've personally never played the PS1 version, but I've been pretty damn close the past few months. I guess I can hold off cause the remake is coming so soon. I hear the PS1 version is pretty obtuse, so you'll likely need to play with a guide if you choose that one. The 3DS version is excellent. I enjoyed the large overworld and the enemies being visible in it. I get the feeling the 3DS version will still hold its own against the new remake and there will be plenty of discussions as to what is considered the definitive version. As of right now, I would say just wait for the remake. It comes out February 5th and I'm sure it will be a nice experience to play with everyone else at the same time. We also have DQ 1+2 coming out next month, so if you're craving some Dragon Quest then that might hold you over until 7R comes out.
