/k/ - Shart barrels

Some cartridges still work great in SBRs. 22LR, for example, works great in a 12" barrel. I can't wait until $0 tax stamps or (god forbid) NFA-less SBRs. Combining a barrel length reduction giving 12" nearly the same speed as 16" (within ~10fps) or ~10-11" about the same speed as 18" if not better with a silencer, I really think we'll see more companies release whatever barrel length actually makes sense for the cartridge and rifle, not what the laws says makes sense for all rifles. That being said my next gun I want is a 20-some inch 22 Magnum just to ensure it stays quiet despite the extra powder. Coming across silenced 22LR noise comparisons is hard, at least reliable ones. With all the research I did I still took a guess. Goes straight from super short pistol to 18". God help you if you want to know what they fuck half the people online shoot regarding ammo. 22 mag, even worse. I've yet to look deep into that, though, but I don't have much hope.

PS: I could've sworn Savage or Mossberg made a 14" 22 Magnum "Trapper" rifle in the past couple years; am I losing my mind?

First thing I want is 14" 22s. Seriously, they pretty much burn up all their powder in 14". Despite this, most companies make ~18" 22s as standard. With Ruger, it's like pulling teeth to find a 16" option (other than the compact 16.12" and a few options like the factory B-TM but they have no rear dovetail despite being made to take a heat shield in the rear dovetail). You lose like 5 FPS going from 16" down to 12" and shit, you actually lose more going up to 18", at least according to the test MDT did. Wish they went shorter but I think they couldn't due to Canuck laws IIRC.

I do, but Impact Sports absolutely wreck directional hearing. When I wear them it becomes more of a 45 degree cone of "probably this way" than actually knowing where something is. They may also not be great for hearing behind either, not to mention the times where it amplifies far away stuff like it's next to you and maybe making nearby stuff sound quiet IIRC. Meanwhile I learned long ago how to pinpoint squirrels to a pretty slim direction from reasonable distance/over hill edge and get them down to the exact tree given 30 seconds to a couple minutes. Squirrels or game running I can pretty easily pick out and track. With Impact Sports, that's a lot harder and it tends to amplify any nearby roads to an annoying amount (which is odd), even at a distance you shouldn't be able to hear them normally. This is why I've resorted to going full in silencing my 22 and I'm starting to consider options for furbearers whether that's 22 Mag silenced, exploring .223 silenced, or going into .300 silenced (which I'm very hesitant of considering price/rd, drop, and potential decrease in damage to vitals but I like the quiet part).
