Cast a Deadly Spell (1991) – A Strong Worth a Watch. In this clever movie made for TV, we see Fred Ward (Remo Williams himself!) as private eye H. Phillips Lovecraft. Set in an alternate 1948 L.A. in which *almost* everyone uses magic -- Lovecraft is hired to track down a stolen book, none other than . . . THE NECRONOMICON! He’s pitted against cool rubber demons (one of which is summoned from a stew pot by eldritch runes!) big, black Haitian zombies, and various FEMME FATALES. In the face of all this madness, Lovecraft *refuses* to use magic, just because it conflicts with his principles; like every literary P.I. worth his salt, from Phillip Marlowe onward, Lovecraft has a CODE of sorts. (In short, he considers magic a big CHEAT in the game of life.)
