Putin is in power because there is no alternative to him. That's pretty much the main reason.
All the slop about "muh rigged voting" misses the point that Russia is a large security state, and a random shlomo from the street can't take the wheel if he doesn't have personal connections with the military, security agencies, big business, etc.

Pretty much it's the same reason why USA and China have no real democracy either. China is a one-party system, USA is also a one-party system that pretends to be 2-party. Russia is a one-party system that pretends to have 5-parties. Everyone "elected" in China follows the party line, everyone "elected" in USA follows whatever AIPAC tells him to follow. And whomever is "elected" in Russia follows what the FSB tells them to follow.
