preface: it's for an e-bike with a mystery hub motor and controller I haven't found datasheets on yet. gonna do more research and maybe some manual testing before hitting digikey but
>the 72V battery is going to drain down first because the converter will try to hold 48V exactly while the battery sags.
for the >USE CASE i guess i dont really care too deeply, but wanted that spare battery to drive ancillary electronics. it's for an e-bike so that would mean lights, radios, etc. the dream was to have yet another transformer drive all my 5/12v shit (lights, radios, usb ports) all the time, but only be integrated with the drive motor when i hit the throttle via a shitty 20$ automotive grade relay.
>If you put a diode in front of it I can't see a reason why it would blow up,
i would hope the motor controller i already have has at least some self-protection but getting a Big Ass Diode may be a good idea, thanks

the thought was to do any infra kinda voltage regulation well before "seeing" the 48v battery. so the 72v battery and its converters would be effectively one big unit that "counts as" a second 48v battery in parallel to it.
