His statement is almost completely correct, though.
The internet of the millennial was full of earnest, passionate people. Weird? Sure. Autistic? Most likely. Degenerate? Depends on where you looked. But the internet was the safe haven where one could find a community of like-minded people and let their freak flag fly, as the youths say. It was the tech revolution equivalent of the black sheep moving from their east fuck-knuckle small towns that treated them as a pariah, to big cities where they could find people who accepted them as one of their own.
People born in the last 20 years can't even fathom the concept that going back just one generation, a vast majority of the Earth's population had a perspective and worldview shaped entirely within a radius ≤100km of where they lived, and their only awareness beyond that came from news anchors or newspaper headlines from mainstream media. Being different was a social death sentence.

I'd love to delve further into the minutiea of the sociological shifts that lead to the way people interact with the internet today, but I remind myself this is just shitposting on a Tibetan woodcarving forum and I'd have better luck squeezing orange juice out of potatoes than finding genuine good faith discussion here.
