It makes sense. Merak gets sliced in half in the OVA and Copen's special attacks are strong enough to slice the Gravekeepers into pieces in iX2. The only reason we don't have Desna getting sliced into chunks by Shred Storm or Zonda bifurcated by Grand Strizer is because INTI doesn't want to flirt with an M rating, even though that's what is happening

I don't know if Zed and his knights (outside of Serpentine) are actually trying to kill GV and Kirin. That GV and Kirin die if they lose is probably just a gameplay thing. In story, they would have just beat them up and taken them prisoner. It's sort of like how Desna will kill Copen, despite her dialogue making it seem like she's trying to show him mercy. Again, had Desna won, she'd have just tied up Copen. See Carrera too, who GV says isn't all that evil and doesn't seem to be trying to kill him. Carrera is a fight autist, but he doesn't kill, preferring to capture his opponents alive. What happens if you lose to Carrera? Same death animation as any other boss.
