FPS games have been totally infested by cheaters. I mean even major stores sell hardware for console cheating.
At this point it's a huge industry piggybacking off the multiplayer gaming ecosystem. We know that multiplayer gaming is a billion dollar industry, so these parasitical organizations that sell cheating software are easily making millions of dollars. With this in mind you can't trust the discourse surrounding cheating because it's likely not organic. Most forums are heavily censored regarding cheating anyway and this is only made worse by sock puppets accounts and bots trying to maintain their narratives.

Ultimately it's only going to get worse as we collectively devolve into a low-trust society. Cheating is inherently anti-social behavior, but since we are at each others throats all the time it has become much easier to justify.
