Russia will not extradite foreigners who have signed contracts with the Russian army at the request of other countries for criminal prosecution and sentencing, Russian media report.
The amendment, approved by the government commission on legislative activity, will apply to foreigners and stateless persons who are serving or have served in the Russian army and other military units under contract, as well as those who have participated in combat operations as part of these formations.
The authorities are also considering a draft law that provides that no decision on deportation, readmission, or expulsion, when provided for by law, will be made in relation to such persons. Russian lawyers say the aim of the amendments is to keep foreign military personnel in Russia.
