I want to use a concept like this for my Martian colony idea.

Open pits where the base is actually a giant plate that leads into the actual city below while the whole thing is covered by glass and steel. Could probably make it multi-level even above the city with the top-most part being a public area while the lower parts act as property for the ultra wealthy or something.
