Pretty much yeah.
A small but vocal group interpreted the story as anti-Ming or pro-Qing, which triggered backlash from nationalistic online circles who idolize the Ming dynasty and some Chink outlets. This in spite of the fact that ancient dynasties (especially in fucking China) were tweedledee and tweedledum when it came to corruption and brutality.
They got asshurt that you kill what are seen as Han ethnic heroes like Zhao Yun, but the plot is that them being brought back at all through black magic is perverting and corrupting them. Ultimately it was a very vocal minority of Chinks who were offended, but because of population numbers, even 1% of gorrillions of people still seems like a lot. The narrative it was the CCP is incorrect, because if the game had been censored by the government, it'd just be pulled outright with no explanation. The patch was the devs responding to the bitching.
tl;dr Chinks really are that sensitive about their own history.
