The more that I think about it, the more that I realize I respect and admire post-sequel SpongeBob more than I like it. The writing feels more like it wants to be Looney Tunes or Ren & Stimpy than SpongeBob, it simply doesn’t compare to the golden age writing. Animation/art wise the show is amazing, it looks pretty fun to work on and the animation looks amazing for a modern cartoon, and it’s good to know that there are artists who want to keep the wacky Ren & Stimpy-like animation style alive. They’ve experimented with art plenty of times in the Patrick Star Show and the main show, one example being the episode "A Fish Called Sandy", which is made to feel like a season 1 episode.

IMO post-sequel SB peaked with season 11, tons of good episodes like Krabby Patty Creature Feature, ChefBob, Karen's Virus, and My Leg (though as much as I enjoyed that episode I do feel like it killed the whole "my leg!!" gag), a good balance between good writing and good animation, probably because Hillenburg worked on the show around that time before his passing. As much as I respect modern SB's art direction I will admit it does feel pretty style over substance.
